Egg Eating and How to Stop it

Egg eating among chickens is quite common. It requires the chicken to break and eats an egg and then develops a liking to it. It often starts as an accidental exposure to a broken egg, which leads to curious pecking and liking to it. A chicken may also eat egg shells if deficient in calcium.

Symptoms of Egg Eating are as follows:

  • Presence of broken egg shells in nests.

Prevention, management and Treatment:

  • First make sure the culprit is not a snake, rat or other wildlife.
  • As chickens imitate each other and follow suit it is crucial that this behavior is stopped as soon as its detected.
  • This includes prompt removal of broken eggs and collecting eggs twice a day and recondition behavior preparing a bad tasting egg mixture for the culprit hens.
